Pre-Holiday Outfit Post (With a special guest!)

Hey everyone! I've once again neglected posting for which I have no excuse (besides having marvelous adventures in LA), so I won't make any... besides the one in parentheses. Lots o' shit has happened in the past few months.*

Living in LA was educational and transformational in a lot of a ways. I ended up doing some serious people-watching, and picked up a few tips regarding urban style, one being the ease and casuality of Angeleno fashion. I saw some ladies and gents rock casual shapes and styles while maintaining a fresh, chic, and edgy air. Second, they really know how to wear neutrals in terms of color, cut, and outfit palette.

While my first impulse is to wear teal, brights and lightweight fabrics, I've been really digging a more androgynous style as of late, mixing muted colors and more structured shapes that just make me feel... snazzy.

Claire came to visit the past few days, which was totally kickass. Reuniting always gets out creative juices flowing, so expect more from us in the coming weeks! Here's what I wore on an adventure day to Santa Cruz:

(Top: Gap, thrifted; blazer: vintage, thrifted; scarf: Eugene, OR; pants: BDG, thrifted; belt: thrifted; SHUZ: Plenty by Tracy Reece, sample sale)

(If you didn't notice, these shoes are UNGODLY AWESOME. I snagged 'em for $30 bucks at a sample sale in San Francisco over Thanksgiving. They feel like a dream after a whole day of walking and can we talk about how crushed velvet and menswear shoes are a match made in heaven?)

I apologize for the unintentional hiatus. Hopefully you all still enjoy our inconsistent yet enthusiastic tirades. Much love to you and yours this holiday season! May your eating binges taste like holiday cheer!

Love,
B

*I spent the fall semester living in inner-city Los Angeles, my parents relocated from Seattle to San Jose, and I've been trying to figure out where I'll spend five months abroad beginning in June.

A Day in 'Dena

Hi Friends! Today was one of those days (in Southern California, at least) where Spring, even Summer was definitely in the air. Of course, I probably better appreciated such days after long, rainy winters in Seattle, but still...

(Top, thrifted; Jeans; thrifted, shoes, Steve Madden; bag & scarf, thrifted; bracelet, self-made)

We visited the Crossroads consignment shop in Pasadena for the first time... four words: HIGH WAISTED SAILOR JEANS. For $12.

Spent the evening at the Norton Simon Museum (it's free for students and has the most incredible impressionist collection I've ever seen at such a small museum)

What are your plans for this weekend?

Style Profile: Man Edition

Dear Interwebs, meet Brenton Hughes:

And he's one classy dude.

As someone who loves thrifting almost/more than I do, he's a pro at mixing old and new. He can integrate his used finds into outfits without looking like a total hobo (And if you've ever been to Seattle, you know what I'm talking about.)

And let's be real, this is a breath of fresh air in a place where most guys only wear neon v-necks and awkward cut-off man-pris.

...um...

(leather black loafers $6- community thrift store; pea coat $45- heritage mens line at XXI; jeans by levi strauss $30-Macy's; Teal short sleeve button down shirt $4-amvets community thrift store)

More style profiles coming your way, it's way more awkward to ask a stranger for their photo and outfit deets than it seems...

A Stylista's Guide to Thrifting

My mother started dragging me into thrift shops and antique stores when I was just a wee one. I remember hating these excursions- dusty, smelly, no sparkly jewelery display cases for me to leave nose smudges on!

(Thrifter-in-training)

As I grew older, though, I began to love thrifting, the majority of my wardrobe having been dug out of a Goodwill or Salvation Army. Among some of my favorite finds were a brand-new pair of puple plaid shiny vans, a Moschino Cheap & Chic blazer (real talk!), and countless flannels.

Not everyone loves thrifting. Or if one does, it can get overwhelming and frustrating... but not anymore!

Here's a few tricks for a successful thrift adventure:

1) Dress appropriately. If you wear things that make trying on clothes easier you'll be a much happier camper. I recommend:
-Slip-on shoes or flats, which make trying on bottoms and thrifted kicks less of a headache
-A cami, which will help you visualize a low-cut dress or sheer blouse better. Plus, it's nice to have a barrier against your skin.
-Limit the jewelery you wear, as it'll just get caught as you try on clothes.

2) Prioritize. What do you want to check out first? Are you looking for anything in particular? If you don't need any more jeans, skip the jeans.

4) Use a critical eye- but not a cynical one! If you
feel as if something doesn't fit or you just might not be able to get the stain out, don't risk it. On the other hand, thrifted clothing is a great way to try out a new style or look without blowing tons of cash on it. Be adventurous!

3) Set a budget and use cash only. You'll be less likely to buy things needlessly if you bring cash and leave your card at home.

Here's some gems we found on a recent excursion:

(Keepin' it Seattle hipster)

(L. struck gold- LITERALLY. It was $15!)

(I'm starting to wish I had actually bought this)

What are your thrifting tricks? What's the best thing you've ever found? Or better yet, what's the worst?!

Holiday Gifts For Your Girlfriends

HELLO everyone!!!!!

I'm home in Seattle now, having survived finals and taken a few days to recover once I arrived home :)

The holidays are GLORIOUS but can be fiscally stressful, especially when you're in college!
Here's a great way to make some cute little gifts on a budget for your girlfriends- I did this for mine when we got together for our Christmas exchange.

1) First you'll need to take a little trip to the thrift store and find some wine/champagne glasses, one for each friend. They don't have to match, and honestly I think it's cuter if they don't! Make sure you wash them, though...

2) Now you get to decide what you want to fill the glasses with- candy, a cute little accessory, or if you're me... matching Betsey Johnson undies! ($2.99 each at TJMaxx!) Decorate the glasses however you wish, with plenty of bows and ribbons!

3) Purchase a bottle of your favorite bubbly, be it alcoholic or non-alcoholic to serve once the presents have been opened!

(It's Martinelli's, c'mon)

How do you celebrate the holidays with your peeps? What kind of DIY gifts have you been crafting this season?

Time to go wrap some presents! :)

Advice to Miss Angela: Studying Abroad in a Tricky Climate/How To Diversify Your Wardrobe

Last week my friend Angela sent me this:

"I'm leaving in a few months to spend a semester studying in Galway, Ireland and I could not be more excited. I got my rain jacket on Summer clearance from REI and I'm getting new rain boots for Christmas. The only thing that worries me is that they go out four nights a week over there and all I own are jeans and V-neck tee shirts. I never even wear jewelry. I'm just a little college student, and I need to save money for essentials, like food and hard cider, but is there a way I can build up a few basic "cute" looks so that I don't embarrass myself?"

I'm going to attempt to answer this in a helpful way that'll also be useful to others- basically, how to diversify one's outfit for "going out" and for climates like Galway. If you guys didn't know, Ireland is like Seattle if it swallowed a bottle of overcast, rainy steroids. It's not as difficult to dress for as say, the African Congo, but it still poses some challenges.

First off, Angela, you can absolutely diversify your wardrobe on a budget! It just takes patience and good organization. Both will really help you if you end up shopping where recommend: thrift stores.*

*I don't know how most of you feel about thrifting, but in all honesty the majority of my wardrobe has come out of a Goodwill, Value Village, or Salvation Army. If you form a good list of what you'll need and give yourself some time to scour the stores from them I'll guarantee you'll come away with good quality stuff for a LOT cheaper. (Click on the links to find locations!)

The two main guidelines for whatever you buy are this: make sure they're versatile and good for layering. I can guarantee you that in Galway, Ireland and anywhere else during the Winter/Spring months you'll never regret layering (except for maybe if you're in SoCal like me muahaha!). So here goes!

1) Boots
And I'm talkin' leather boots. Or faux-leather. Europeans love they boots, ladiez. Plus they're comfy, warm, and dry during inclement weather. They also will open up your wardrobe: dresses and skirts will suddenly become accessible when you've got some boots to pair them with.

This might be something you want to spend a little extra money on, but you can get a nice, durable pair of boots for a price that won't give you a heart attack. And you'll wear them a LOT, I promise.

2) Accessories
Accessorizing doesn't mean that you have to have 5,000 pairs of earrings or every damn jingly charm necklace from Forever21. It just depends on what you like. Do you like headbands? They're a good way to dress up one of your infamous v-necks, Angie. Here's some accessories I do heartily recommend, however:

a) Tights: if you invest in a few good pairs of tights or leggings (The Nordstrom Rack will have some great ones- if they have some that feel like sweaters, BUY THEM. THEY ARE GOLD) that you'll be able to layer under skirts and dresses. Skip the cheap ones (unless you want to buy some fun colored ones) and spend the ten bucks on a good pair that won't run or be itchy.

b) Belts: belts are super easy to come by and will be invaluable to your wardrobe. It's always great to have some belts in a few different widths, colors, and textures to use to add a little somethin' to your outfit. All of mine came from a thrift store, and my two most used ones are a thick suede-ish black one and a thick braided brown leather one.

c) Scarves: again, easy to find at a thrift store. Find a few in a cool color or pattern to brighten up a raincoat or a bar-going ensemble.

3) Bottoms
Comfy, worn-in jeans are the best. But there are some more stylish, easy options that are just as comfy.

a) Tailored, dark jeans: When you've got a sleek pair of dark-wash jeans you can pull anything off with them. Dark washes are sleek and flattering on everyone. Even better if they're a bootcut/skinny fit so that they can tuck into boots! Jeans are one thing I might recommend not looking for in thrift store unless you have a LOT of patience. Since dark wash jeans are so common, you can find some anywhere- Nordy's Rack (I recently found a pair of dark James Cured skinny jeans there for 30 bucks. For real.), Forever21, Gap... depends on your budget and body type!

b) Skirts: they're wonderful and so easy to find in different styles and colors. If you like fitted bandage/pencil skirts or fuller skirts to wear up higher on your waist, go for a black/grey one and then try to branch out- a bright color maybe, a crazy pattern, or SEQUINS. For winter/gloomy weather I'd advise softer/stretchier knits that you'll be able to feel cozy in. My black knit bandage skirt was $5 at H&M and I can wear it with anything. Boom.

4) Tops
Guess what! Your v-necks will be rocked with the help of accessories and some diverse bottoms! But if you ever find yourself looking at a cute top while at Goodwill or some little boutique, don't be afraid to spend a little extra dough on something unique! While it's great to have versatile pieces in your wardrobe, you also need a good balance of gems that really speak of your personal style.

a) Sweaters! They are the best! Plain cardigans, striped grandpa sweaters, and the list goes on. What do you like?

b) Coats: If you think you'll want a coat other than your rain jacket, leather jackets are sassy and easily found nowadays (and yet again great for layering). Peacoats are a little more classic but are smelly when wet :/

Whew... this is probably a big post of verbal throw-up that I'll probably edit later. Hope this helps!

DIY: Magnetic Scrabble Letters!

My mom loves scrabble letters. She's picked them up at thrift stores over the past year and has a set sitting on a bowl near the front door and arranges them into cute phrases, like this:

(Waiting for me after I came home from my first year of college)

There being about four sets of scrabble letters in my house, mom gave me some to take with to school to put on the coffee table. I decided that they would get more use as magnets, on our fridge!

All it took was a pair of scissors and a trip to the hardware store to buy a few feet of magnetic strips (with adhesive on one side, so no glue gun required!) for about $2.00.

Cut the pieces to about 3/4 of an inch, or whatever best suits the length of the Scrabble piece.

Secure the little magnets to the Scrabble pieces by removing the adhesive covering and pressing them firmly to the back of the Scrabble square.

-- And booyah! Cute magnetic Scrabble pieces for your fridge, white board, or what have you.

The total budget for this project is somewhere around $5.00 :)

Clothing Swap Success!

Tonight I hosted a clothing swap at my house; it was rather hastily planned but so much fun!

(Attempting at organization- see the teeny signs? :3)

Although there were only 6 of us, it was actually pretty ideal- two huge bags of clothes are sitting in my basement waiting to be donated!

Everyone left with some treasures!

(Natalie with her favorite find: an adorable romper from Gavia)

Hilarity also ensued:

(Brooke. No words for this.)

I'll post a couple of my favorite finds later- ladies who attended, feel free to post a photo of your favorite item found in the comments
(or send it to me and I'll post it)!

All in all, hosting or attending a clothing swap is a great way to freshen up your wardrobe for free and relieve your closet of unwanted items that will be enjoyed by a friend (also for free!).

Oh, and I made cupcakes for the event. Of course. Lemon Lavender :)
